Tattoos were neither of those things.

I stood in the doorway. Hovering like an awkward giraffe. My eyes fluttered over the bridal party. Drunk and squawking like gulls in mating season.

Maybe it was au-faite to invite your wedding planner to a bachelorette party, but I doubted it. For some bizarre reason, Tipsy Dubois (the name on her birth certificate was Tipsana) had decided that she wanted my attendance.

The first rule of event planning? Nothing is impossible. Give the customer what they want. And if you can't? Steer them in the correct direction with such subtlety that they believed it was their idea all along.

I adhered to these rules as best I could, but I was not a people person. Leo, my roommate and social skills teacher was the only reason that I no longer spoke like a robot.

The worst part? I knew that I was doing it! The drab monotone voice I used when relaying facts was a comfort blanket. I could watch as their eyes glazed over and their attention diverted elsewhere. I wanted that. I didn’t want to be the subject of scrutiny. Mainstream people. Normies, as I called them, often looked at me like I had two heads. I hated those looks.

The bride squealed. Her laughter was like nails down a chalkboard.

I pushed away from the framed photos on the wall and walked over the gaggle of tipsy women that had decided they wanted to finalise their evening in a tattoo shop.

And... Tipsy had decided that she wanted a banana tattooed on her shoulder.

For whatever reason, I did not know. I tried to talk her out of it, but her maid of honour (who I suspected had nefarious motives) was encouraging her. I had even gotten my phone out and recorded the conversation.

“Tipsy, are you sure you want to do this?”

  “Yes.”

“Tipsy. I, Gwen Bell, your wedding planner, want to remind you that your wedding dress is strapless. Are you sure you want a tattoo of a banana on your shoulder.”

  “Yes. Shut up!”

I should have known the drunken ninny would blame me.

I should have known that she would get me fired.
